So as you can see i have some of these old school recessed florescent lighting. It's like they built a box for the florescent and installed it inside.
Well... i HATE fluorescent, and im not too keen on the "box" either, but i wanted to see before i rip it down if anybody else had any suggestions on what i might be able to do with these things.
I was thinking that i could always put up some more sheetrock and then put some recessed can lighting in there? Or maybe get some kind of track lighting?
What do you guys think? Thanks!

You will have to do some framing one way or the other. If all the box is enclosing is the florescent fixtures you might want to get rid of it all together and gain all of your ceiling height back? If you keep it, you certainly have the space up there for recessed lighting and this might look a bit better over the shower area than track. Not sure what code is in your area and whether you can put hot track in a bath---especially over the sink? I am sure it will have to be on a GFCI.
Certainly not the person to try and talk you into horrible florescent fixtures but full spectrum bulbs do make a big difference if you need an interim solution. The color is still not great for looking at yourself in a mirror in the morning though.

I just "re-bulbed" all the incandescent fixtures in an art gallery's common areas with a nice color temperature of these bulbs and it looks great. You may have to get the bulbs at an electrical supply company or bulb store though; the box stores only carry the most common kind. Of course we use halogens along tracks for the art. They make LED bulbs for recessed lighting now too but I don't think they are yet bright enough for most applications.

I think that's the route i'm going to go...i'm already in the process of switching all my lightbulbs out to energy efficient ones, i have a TON of yard lighting too, i'm gonna switch all those out to energy efficient floods
Plus, i just found a section thats about 1ft x 1ft missing a piece of drywall...my guess is whenever they re plumbed the house they didn't fix it. So i'll probably just buy a piece of drywall, fix that piece and use the rest for the "boxes"

Now i just need to find somewhere online i can buy old work canned lighting by the pallet I'm in love in recessed lighting and plan on having it all over my house...probably gonna install 6 of them in my bedroom, a couple in the kitchen, and now some in the bathrooms! Yippie!
